McLaren’s MP4-12C supercar was unveiled to the media recently, along with its official details. The two-seater is equipped with a 3.8-liter twin turbo petrol engine created in collaboration with Ricardo. The car is able to generate a maximum power output of 441 kW (592 bhp / 600 PS) developed at 7,000 rpm. The engine can rev all the way up to a highly impressive 8,500 rpm. Its peak torque taunts the other powerful turbo diesels out there at 599 Nm (442 lb-ft) from 3,000 rpm. Actually, 479 Nm (353 lb-ft) of that is already available from 2,000 rpm.
McLaren has yet to announce performance figures but it’s expected that car can sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h in the very low 3s and can hit a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph). Torque goes to the rear axle through a 7-speed double clutch gearbox prompted by F1-style aluminum rockers situated behind the steering wheel.
Three driving modes are offered: Normal, Sport and Track. There are two configurations: H and P. H refers to handling and it changes the steering weight, suspension stiffness and stability control. The P mode alters throttle response, gearshift times and engine sounds. Measuring 4507mm long, 1908mm wide, 1199mm high and with a wheelbase of 2670mm), this car is very compact.
But then, due to its carbon composite monocoque, it has a claimed dry weight of less than 1,300kg (2,866 lbs). Aside from the low weight, this car offers better performance and also has low C02 emissions. McLaren Automotive reports a figure of under 300g/km, which is significantly lower than its key rivals, the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. You’d be surprised at the latest gadgets when you enter the car. These include a 7-inch touch screen and Wi-Fi connectivity.
