Audi is expanding its R8 model lineup and will be releasing several new models – the first of which is a V8-powered version of the R8 Spyder that will be revealed towards the end of the year. Currently, there are three versions of the R8 supercar: the 4.2-liter V-8 model and the newer 5.2-liter V-10 model, which is offered in either hard-top coupe or Spyder convertible body styles.
The first model, the V-8 version of the R8 Spyder, is currently only available with a V-10 engine. Expect the car to be priced approximately $135,000 mark and to arrive at showrooms in early 2011.
There also will be a sportier model, which will be inspired by the R8 LMS race car. At a press event late last year, Audi quattro development chief Stefan Reil said that there are talks to produce lightweight versions of the R8 and TT.
Audi has actually developed a similar car back in 2005 when it released a limited edition TT quattro Sport to mark the end of production of the previous generation TT.
Compared to the standard model, this car has slightly more power, and has a firmer suspension, a stripped out interior and Recaro bucket seats.
After Reil gave these comments, an R8 prototype was spotted in Germany wearing an oversized fixed rear wing, small canards attached to the front bumper, and bigger brakes. Car and Driver said that Lamborghini’s new Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera and its 570hp V-10 is indicative of what is to come. It is still unconfirmed if this model will have an RS or R8 Sport badge.
