To meet the growing demand in Europe for small, fashionable cars, Opel/Vauxhall has a new minicar planned that it expects to set the trend in its segment. In an interview at the Geneva Motor Show, the brand’s sales and marketing chief Alain Visser said that this car will be slotted below its Corsa and that internally, it is called “an iPod on wheels.” Visser said that the company wants the car done within 24 months.
Last month, Opel CEO Nick Reilly said Opel will invest 11 billion euros (about $15 billion) over the next five years to refine its “advanced vehicle technology and offer a fresh and exciting product portfolio.” Opel aims that by 2014, 80% of its model lineup will be less than 3 years old. For 2010, there are eight launches planned. This list includes the Meriva, Corsa, Movano and Astra Sports Tourer. In 2011, there will be four launches, including the Ampera extended-range electric car. One or two years after the launch of the minicar, the company will introduce an electric version.
