The engine regulations for the FIA’s 2011 World Rally Championship have just been finalized. Ford isn’t one to waste time as it is actually already now intensifying the development of its new 2011 Fiesta RS WRC. The hot hatch is slated to replace the Focus RS World Rally Car, which has won 42 rallies since 1999 as well as two constructor’s championships in 2006 and 2007. Reportedly, Ford and partner M-Sport had received information early on that the FIA will be implementing a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine standard for the S2000-classified racers.
It’s Duratec-derived and it is currently undergoing tuning and development by renowned French constructor Pipo Moteur. Meanwhile, M-Sport’s Fiesta S2000 program is fast gaining ground. Last January, their racecar won its debut race in Monte Carlo. Unlike the 2011 car, this one uses a 280hp 2.0-liter turbo Duratec I-4. Ford’s engineers assert that the two cars will have different looks and with FIA’s new regulations, it’s probable that these cars will have varying degrees in potency too.
