In a recent interview with Automotive News, Michael Dick, Audi’s board member for technical development, said that the German manufacturer is planning a rapid expansion of its plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles over the next few years as a key component in Volkswagen Group’s strategy to dominate the alternative-powertrain by decade’s end.
According to Michael Dick, the next-generation A5 sedan will also have the potential to be full hybrid by the end of 2012, which means that the vehicle will join the recently introduced A8 Hybrid Sedan at the Geneva Motor Show as well as the soon-to-be-launched Q5 hybrid crossover.
“In the future, our customers will be able to choose from an increasingly broad range of driveline technologies,” Audi CEO Rupert Stadler said in Geneva.
“We shall offer electric power in the best possible forms for a wide range of mobility needs. The hybrid driveline will be followed by all-electric vehicles” he added.
As we said last month, the e-Tron badge will have an important part for Audi, because just like Quattro has become a synonym for all-wheel drive, the e-Tron wull be synonym for electric mobility. Audi also set up a division in order to develop and produce a range of high-priced e-Tron electric cars starting in 2012.
