The Ford Police Interceptor, a new front-drive sedan that shares underpinnings with the Ford Taurus, will replace the Crown Victoria police car. The Police Interceptor is a vehicle that’s purposefully engineered to surpass the Crown Victoria’s durability, safety and performance record. The Police Interceptor will start being assembled in late 2011, which is when the Crown Victoria ends production. Ford will also be offering an all-wheel-drive version. In a statement, Mark Fields, Ford president of the Americas, said that this vehicle is in response to police throughout the country who want a “new kind of weapon in the battle for public safety.”
In addition, Ford announced a second pursuit model, which it has yet to name, to be offered to police agencies. Information about this model will be announced in the third quarter. The Ford Police Interceptor will be offered with two powertrains: the 3.5-liter V-6 with an estimated 263hp and the EcoBoost 365hp twin-turbocharged, direct injection 3.5-liter V-6. The 365hp engine model is offered with all-wheel drive. In the past years when the economy was still healthy, the market for police vehicles can total around 65,000 vehicles.
The top choice of most police agencies in the past years has been the Crown Victoria due to its roomy interior and large trunk. Pursuit versions of the Dodge Charger and front-drive Chevrolet Impala are being offered; however, neither vehicle has been as successful as the Crown Victoria. The upcoming police car from General Motors is expected to be a stronger competitor.
